The main design element is centred around the gold stripe it represents the country's position of 1 degree south of the Equator. The blue background stands for the Pacific Ocean. The country of Nauru itself is represented by the 12 pointed white star. Each of the points on the star represents an indigenous tribe of the island. The flag has a white strip on the side
